Green Mussels For Arthritis
Green Mussels For Arthritis
Green mussels for arthritis are found off the coast of New Zealand. Officially they are called green-lipped mussels "Go away", you’ll say, "mussels don’t have lips. Where the two halves of the mussels come together is a green tinge and it looks like two green lips, meeting. That’s how they got their name. They’re found off the coast of South Island, which is part of New Zealand. The Maori natives gather these mussels. They also eat them regularly because they are considered a delicacy. Gathering those mussels is not an easy task. It takes climbing and clambering over the slippery coastal rocks. An amazing thing was observed.
There are elderly men, in their seventies and eighties, climbing over those slippery rocks with the same agility and gusto as their sons and grandsons Of course this amazing fact caught the attention of the medical and research community. It really made them sit up, shake their heads and roll their eyes. They had never seen men over sixty have this level of agility. They started wondering what caused this lack of signs of arthritis. And, as researchers tend to do, they started studies and tests. I’ll first explain what arthritis really is and then get back to the results of the tests. Arthritis develops when the cartilage in a joint, or more joints, wears down. Cartilage covers the end of the bones in a joint and acts like a cushion. It allows the bones to slide over each other smoothly. There are several reasons why the cartilage gets damaged or wears down.
We might injure or break a jointand the little fragments of bone might not align properly again when healing. This would put the joint out of balance and it would wear out faster when being used. Also the cartilage can wear down through repeated use over the years. Athletes often put a lot of pressure on certain joints. Those joints will wear out faster. The same happens to people with jobs where, for instance, the thumb or wrist are overtaxed. They will be at risk for developing basal joint arthritis. Once the cartilage has worn down, the bones will stop sliding over each other smoothly. The "cushion" is gone. The bone ends will become roughened and an inflammation will develop. And that is what causes the pain. The researchers soon discovered that the people of the Maori tribe ate a lot of the green mussels. So they analyzed the mussels. The result was astonishing. The fatty acids in the mussel are extremely anti inflammatory. So much so that by eating these mussels the people of the island never developed any arthritis. Eating green mussels for arthritis is absolutely a great way to keep the joints healthy. Of course, as expected, numerous companies started extracting the fatty acids from the mussels and developing supplements like mussel oil capsules. And, as with all products, not all mussel oil is created equal. So we’ll have to find the proper product.
