How to Use Arthritis Gloves

Arthritis gloves are used as a way to treat arthritis of the hand. These gloves allow someone who is suffering from this condition to be able to move their hands and use their fingers as they were once used to before they became afflicted with the arthritis condition.

Different Forms of Arthritis

There are many forms of arthritis. The most common type is that which affects older people, although some younger people have been affected with arthritis as well. This condition involves a breaking down of the joints, swelling and pain and eventually the inability to use the joints. Arthritis can affect any joint and most often affects the fingers. People who have arthritis in their hands begin to experience pain when they are going about their every day tasks. The pain eventually keeps getting increasingly worse – to the point where only medical treatment can help.

How Arthritis Diagnosis is Done

A doctor will do a blood test and take some X-rays to make a diagnosis of arthritis. In many cases, based on the symptoms, the doctor will be able to make a clinical diagnosis of the condition right away. In the case where the arthritis is primarily affecting the hands, the doctor will most likely advise wearing specially designed gloves to help with the condition.

Managing the Pain of Arthritis

Arthritis gloves can be found in any store that sell surgical and medical equipment and even in your local drug store. They are the best alternative when it comes to treating this condition without medication. Most doctors will advise that you take an ibuprofen if you feel the pain from the arthritis condition. There are studies, however, that indicate that taking too much ibuprofen can be detrimental to your health. Studies have linked this medication with stomach disorders, liver disorders and even stomach cancer. Taking too much over the counter pain medication is never a good idea as it can cause numerous problems in the digestive tract.

In addition to gloves, alternate therapy is also used in the treatment of arthritis. This involves physical therapy on the hands that is effective for keeping the hands mobile with as little pain as possible. Many people who have advanced arthritis in the hands will find that their joints swell so much to the point where the hands become deformed and unable to perform the most basic functions. This can be avoided by using physical therapy to treat the arthritis condition.

Staving off Arthritis in the Early Stages

If you feel a cracking and swelling in the joints of your fingers as well as pain in the hands after you have completed a task, you may be suffering from the early onset of arthritis. Although this condition is not a life threatening condition, it can be very painful and can end up causing you to eliminate activities that you once enjoyed. In order to stop arthritis in its tracks, you need to do what you can do to stave off the condition.

Massage your hands gently to make sure that you have good blood flow throughout the fingers and hands. Keep your hands warm as the cold will make the arthritic condition even worse. Before becoming reliant on pain medication, consider wearing arthritis gloves that will alleviate the pain and allow you to perform tasks that you are used to performing without incurring pain.

Best Water Exercises For Arthritis in the Knees, Hips and Joints …

If you have arthritis, either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, you may have been thinking about doing some water exercises for your knees, hips or other arthritic joints. Water exercises, meaning either those used in aqua aerobics or resistance exercises, have been used for years by arthritis sufferers to find pain relief.

Over the years water exercises for arthritis have been fine-tuned so right now the best exercises have been developed by many experts in the field. Exercise physiologists and doctors who specialize in sports medicine, rheumatologists, physical therapists and other health professionals have come up with the best arthritis exercises for use in the water.

Water exercises work very well for people who have arthritis in their knees and hips. People without arthritis greatly benefit too. The floating feeling or buoyancy of the water takes the stress off knees and hips.

If you’re doing water exercises on your own it’s best do the exercises with the water at chest-height. If you’re going to take aqua exercise classes, the instructors may make aerobics a part of your exercise period. Of course aerobic exercise will greatly benefit your heart and may even lower your blood pressure.

Aerobic exercise in the water may consist of exercise that moves the large muscles such as those in your legs. You’ll be kept constantly moving to get the heart rate up and sustained for at least 20 minutes or so.

Resistance exercise in the water contributes to building your muscles and strengthens them. Noodles (which are flotation devices) are used to exercise the arms and shoulders. The noodle is held at about the level of the waist while you are under water then you lift it over your head. You will feel resistance. Make sure to start the lift under the water.

You can do these exercises on your own in a public pool, private pool, Jacuzzi or wherever you have access to water. You may want to check with your doctor before starting any new water exercise routine or before you sign up for any water exercise or aqua aerobics classes.

If you’re using public pools, try to find pools that use salt water rather than chlorine. Chlorine is very hard on the body and skin. Much is absorbed and the long term effects are not known. Olympic swimmers will not swim in chlorine pools. Many public pools have switched from chlorine to salt water. Call around and see what the pools are using before you get started.

Doing these exercises may help relieve some of your arthritis pain. Many arthritics have reported pain relief after starting a water exercise program. You can find relief too.

And don’t forget that diet plays a big part in arthritis and exercise coupled with an arthritis diet or raw food diet will get you on the road to superior pain-free health.

There are many small joints present in hand and wrist, which function together to produce motion. These joints are essential to perform most of our day-to-day activities like threading a needle or tying a shoelace. It would be very difficult to perform our daily activities if these joints are affected by arthritis. Arthritis can affect various parts of the hand and wrist. There are multiple causes, which develop arthritis in hand. Recent research reveals that one out of every five individuals live in the United States has not less than a joint with the signs or symptoms of arthritis. Nearly 50 percent of the arthritis sufferers are under age of 50 years. It is the major cause of impairment in the United States. It characteristically occurs either from disease or from trauma.

The cartilage acts as natural shock absorber, which renders a smooth gliding layer for the joint. All the arthritic joints drop off cartilage. If the cartilage turns damaged or worn, or is destroyed because of disease or trauma, the joint becomes severely painful and find it very difficult in performing mobility. The body ties to compensate for the disoriented cartilage. It produces synovial fluid in the synovium (joint lining), which strives to behave as a cushion; however, it also induces the joints to swell. This activity limits motion. The swelling stimulates stretching of the capsule (joint covering), which induces pain in the joints. Over a period of time, when the arthritis is not cared for, the bones present in the joint may lose their regular shape. This forces more pain in the joints and it further restricts motion.

Arthritis of the hand can be diagnosed by a physician by testing the hand and by taking X-ray. Specialized studies with the help of recent equipments like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are normally not required. Occasionally, a scan in the affected area would be very helpful. The bone scan would support the physician to diagnose arthritis even at an early stage; however, the X-rays would not show the early arthritis. There is another procedure called arthroscopy, by which a physician can view the joint by direct examination. During this procedure, the physician puts in a tiny camera into the joint to observe inside. It allows the most clear-cut picture of the joint without making a huge incision. However, this is an encroaching operation and must not be utilized as an ordinary diagnostic tool.

Arthritis of the hand and wrist can be treated through injections, medication, splinting, and surgery. However, the efficiency of the treatment is based on how far the disease is progressed; how many joints have been affected; the activity level, age, and other medical considerations of the patient; whether the affected hand is a dominant or a non-dominant one.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory illness that affects about one percent of the world’s population, and in my family it has been passed down from mother to daughter for at least 5 generations. It seems I have always lived with the pain of arthritis. I used to just accept the fact that I was helpless to do anything about it. Not anymore. Since I have begun to explore the possibilities of herbal medicine my quality of life has improved and my daily arthritic pain level has decreased markedly. Here is a few of my favorite home remedies.

Balm of Giliad Oil
The resin of popular buds contains salicin, the same painkiller and anti-inflammatory as aspirin. When infused in oil, they have a light, pleasing scent and are very soothing to arthritis pain

Crush the dried buds then infuse in organic olive oil following the directions for herb infused oils. I get the best results by applying very low, direct heat for 2 weeks, rather than using a solar heat method. Filter and bottle oil. Balm of Gilead oil makes a great base for salves when thickened with beeswax. Add Juniper, Eucalyptus, and or Marjoram essential oils to create a wonderful soothing balms. Good for soothing deep tissue pain, and tough arthritis pain.

Rosemary infused oil is one of my favorite ways to use cuttings from my rosemary plants. Rosemary oil makes a fabulous base oil to massage sore muscles, backaches, and soothe arthritis pain. According to Dr. Duke’s database rosemary contains the compounds rosemarinic acids, borneol, thymol and carvacrol, all which help relieve painful muscle spasms.

Tips: Only make small batches, allow fresh cuttings to wilt overnight, to reduce the amount of moisture in your oil. Strip the leaves from the woody stems, and bruise to help release the essential oil. ( a rolling pin works well for this) Infuse using a slow and steady heat source, like a sunny windowsill, or an over set to warm. To reduce spoilage, sterilize your jars, add a tablespoon or so of vinegar to the oil while infusing, and allow to stand overnight to allow any water to separate from the oil. Add and a pinch of Vitamin E oil to the finished oil, if you have it on hand. Store finished oil in a dark colored bottle, and keep in a cool place.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition which is considered to be a chronic, inflammatory disorder that causes the immune system to attack the joints. This debilitating disease is a disabling and painful inflammatory condition, and can often lead to a major loss of mobility due to pain and joint expiration. Since rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease, it often affects extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles.

A number of herbs have been shown to feature significant anti-inflammatory properties. Some herbs also can be potential painkillers as well as being anti-inflammatory in nature. However, further testing of possible herbal remedies is still in the early stages and it would be difficult to tell the true effectiveness of these herbs. A number of promising herbal substitutes for painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs are shown below to harbor significant anti-inflammatory properties:.

Birch leaf juice – Acts as a diuretic without irritating the kidney. It is advised to take 1 tablespoon three times daily.

Boswellia – Boswellia, has been investigated for its effects on arthritis. The herb has a unique anti-inflammatory action, and acts much like the conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). People are advised to take 400-800 mg of extract in capsules or tablets three times per day.

Blueberries and cherries – These berries are rich sources of flavonoid molecules, specifically proanthocyanidins. These flavonoids possess membrane and collagen stabilizing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory actions, including many other functions that are very beneficial in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Celery seeds – These seeds help clear uric acid from the joints of gout and arthritis patients. To prepare, boil 1 tsp. of seeds in 1 cup of water for fifteen minutes, strain and sip.

Dandelion – Noted to dispel uric acid. Take 3 capsules daily, 1 tbsp. juice or 1 cup tea, twice daily for four to six weeks to reduce the frequency and intensity of pain, and to strengthen the connective tissue.

Devil’s claw root – Is known to be effective in reducing the inflammation of connective tissues, as it dispels uric acid.

Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) – Chinese skullcap has proven anti-arthritic and anti Chinese skullcap does not appear to have any adverse effects at therapeutic levels. Its therapeutic-inflammatory actions, similar in effect to the prescription drugs phenylbutazone and indomethacin. action appears to be related to its high content of flavonoid molecules.

Chinese thoroughwax – (Bupleuri falcatum) This root is an important ingredient in various prescriptions in Chinese traditional medicine, particularly remedies for inflammatory conditions.

Ginger – In one significant study, Indian researchers gave three to seven grams of ginger a day to 28 people with rheumatoid arthritis. More than 75 percent of those participating in the study reported at least some relief from pain and swelling.

Feverfew – Feverfew has a long history in traditional herbal treatment circles for the treatment of fever, arthritis and migraine. Extracts of feverfew have indicated greater activity in inhibiting inflammation in experimental studies. Feverfew extracts have been noted to inhibit the synthesis of many pro-inflammatory compounds at their initial stage of synthesis.

Dong quai – This herb is potent for relieving fleeting muscle and joint pains, particularly, if they are worse in damp conditions. Take I tbsp. of dried root juice three times daily.

Along with these herbal concoctions, rheumatologists also advise that treatment for conditions like these also includes rest and physical activity. Regular exercise is required for maintaining joint mobility and strengthening the joint muscles. Swimming is particularly good, since it allows for exercise with a minimum of stress on the joints. Heat and cold compresses are effective modalities that can ease RA symptoms before and after exercise.

Is There a Rheumatoid Arthritis Natural Treatment

Is there a rheumatoid arthritis natural treatment? Is there just one or are there many rheumatoid arthritis natural treatments? What are they? How effective are they? Are these complete cures or do they put arthritis into remission?

The protocol listed below is a summary of months of research, the summary of many experiments and clinical studies.

Gelatin
Gelatin is made of collagen, the raw material in joints and connective tissue. A restaurant food supplier selling unsweetened gelatin in pound or kilogram (2.2 pounds) quantities is the cheapest source.

Gelatin is very similar in structure to the collagen type 2 that composes connective tissues including cartilage. The theory with using gelatin as a remedy for arthritis is that as a precursor to cartilage the gelatin prevents arthritic damage from occurring and supports the body to repair existing damage.

In a Harvard study a heaping tablespoon of gelatin daily put arthritis into remission for 28 out of 29 patients. Remission occurred within 90 days.

Gelatin is usually a very safe product with a few people reporting stomach upset very rarely.

The daily dosage is a heaping tablespoon of gelatin in water or juice. Vitamin C may be mixed into the gelatin.

Preparation of the gelatin:
Fill a glass one quarter full with cold water; tap water temperature is fine.
Sprinkle the heaping tablespoon of gelatin on the water and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
Add about a quarter of a glass of hot tap water, not boiling water. Stir well.
Add a quarter of a glass of cold water and stir again.
Drink.

This portion of the rheumatoid arthritis remedy protocol is particularly important for people who drastically limit their red meat intake.

Pharmaceutical grade vs. food-grade fish oil
Fish oil should reduce the inflammation of arthritis. Clinical studies and academic experiments over the last 200 years have consistently indicated rheumatoid arthritic relief is one of many benefits from fish oil.

At this time there is no standardized definition in the USA to differentiate between pharmaceutical grade and food grade fish oil.

An analysis of nine studies of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers taking omega-3s showed no reduction in joint damage but the number of tender joints decreased. In six of the studies, people with rheumatoid arthritis were able to reduce their use of NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Additionally, a 2005 study of people with rheumatoid arthritis indicated increased positive benefits when fish oil supplements were used in combination with olive oil used in everyday cooking.

Symptoms are dose dependent in that most people that "try" fish oil for rheumatoid arthritic relief only take 1 or 2 capsules daily. A typical high-grade fish oil capsule at 30% polyunsaturated fatty acid would require 9 – 10 capsules a day to achieve the basal minimum dosage.

A small number of people report abdominal cramps and diarrhea when taking this amount, 9 – 10 capsules daily, of fish oil. Fish oil products that contain high quantities of vitamin A and D, which could be toxic in high quantities, should not be used.

Since there are some pharmaceutical grade and food grade fish oil formulations that contain as much as 50% polyunsaturated fatty acids, be sure to verify the amount on the label. Adjust the number of capsules accordingly.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit blood clotting; avoid taking fish oil supplements before and after surgery. Fish oil may have a "laxative effect" at different dosages on some people. Consult your health care professional before beginning any supplements.

Green Tea
China, Japan and India are countries where green tea is regarded as a healthy beverage with the potential to prevent certain diseases. These countries have a much lower rate of rheumatoid arthritis than elsewhere around the world.

A study at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, USA discovered that mice which were fed green tea were significantly less susceptible to developing arthritis than the mice fed plain water. The test group of mice fed green tea did develop arthritis; however it occurred as late onset and mild. Eight of 18, or 44%, of the mice receiving green tea developed arthritis while 17 out of 18, or 94%, of the control group mice fed water developed arthritis.

The study concluded that the green tea effect was dramatic.

The green tea used for the polyphenols was regular, not decaffeinated. This part of the procedure may not be advisable for people that have to restrict their intake of caffeine.

Diet
Many people feel that diet is the foundation upon which a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis builds.

In other words, start with your every day diet; modify it as much as possible to be supportive and preventive. Particularly your every day diet must not lead to being overweight! (Why add more pounds to those poor stressed out bones and joints.)

Then, add the glycerin. After 10 to 14 days add the fish oil remedy in addition to the glycerin, after another 2 weeks add green tea to the glycerin and fish oil, etc.

Most of these simple, safe and relatively inexpensive rheumatoid arthritis remedies shown in this remedy protocol are effective to some degree for some people, perhaps a majority of people. They certainly will not be effective for everyone all the time. Consequently testimonials are of limited use. This rheumatoid arthritis remedy protocol is designed specifically as an incremental protocol where the sufferer modifies their everyday diet and then adds one remedy, then another, then another, etc.

Author: Peter Redunet

More rheumatoid arthritis remedies in this protocol will be added in later articles.

Hello! Peter Redunet here.
I had a very mild case of gout that I handled with some all-natural treatment. While I was researching gout I found some similarity between gout and rheumatoid arthritis. AND I was amazed at the medicines prescribed – particularly the side effects! Right then I needed to find out more and how to avoid those pages upon pages of (yuck) side effects! I’m sharing more right here.

Vitamin D and its Important Health Benefits

In order for the body to produce vitamin D, which is an essential nutrient, getting enough sunlight is important. But unfortunately, during this time of year the combination of bundling up for winter plus a lack of sunlight, limits the body’s ability to produce enough vitamin D. So what is the next best thing to do?

Besides exposure to sunlight, the next best place to get your vitamin D is in your diet. Cod liver oil has been found to be a valuable source of vitamin D. It has been shown to ward off rickets and to ease stiff and creaking joints for more than a hundred years. Like other fish oils, cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fats, and is instrumental in improving brain function, memory, immune response, allergies, and manic-depression.

These oils come in two major forms: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Consuming a great amount of these fats has been connected with a reduced risk of cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack and stroke. Because omega-3 fats come with a natural anti-inflammatory effect in the body, the biochemical benefit is able to provide relief from conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Like vitamin D, cod liver oil has important benefits for the brain in that DHA is vital for the structural integrity of the brain, while EPA plays an important role in the daily operation of the brain. Omega-3 fats continue to make headway in the prevention and/or treatment for many mental ailments, such as depression and dementia.

Studies have also shown that increased exposure to sunlight is linked with a decreased risk of several forms of cancer, such as breast, prostate, and colon. Evidence from test-tube and animal experiments proves that vitamin D has the ability to reduce the risk of developing and spreading of cancerous tumors, as well as protecting against multiple sclerosis.

Research conducted by several experts reveals that seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as "winter blues", may be associated with a deficiency in vitamin D. One study showed that taking a five-day supply of vitamin D (at a dose of 400 or 800 IU daily) improved winter mood. In another study where individuals were treated with either 600 or 4000 IU of a daily dose of vitamin D for at least six months, researchers found that both dosages of vitamin D were responsible for improving the participants’ mood and health. Those who took the higher dose were said to have benefited the most.

Author: Earnest Young

To get the necessary amount of vitamin D and omega-3 fats from cod liver oil, take 1-2 teaspoons a day throughout the winter season. For those who dislike the original taste, naturally ( http://buydominica.com ) flavored cod liver oils (with lemon or orange) are now available.

Arthritis Knee Exercises – 6 Exercises You Can Do at Home

Arthritis in the knee, which is commonly referred to as osteoarthritis, is a common condition wherein the protective cartilage around the knee joints wears and tears away leading to pain and discomfort.

This condition is usually developed by those who are overweight, over 50 years of age, and is commonly experienced by women. Osteoarthritis has a number of causes which include excessive strain or stress on the joint, weight, age, and heredity. One of the best treatments for this condition is to perform arthritis knee exercises which will help greatly in restoring the proper movement of the joints as well as in strengthening the knee. In this article, you will find a number of arthritis knee exercises that will surely help in nursing your knee back to good health.

The following arthritis knee exercises can be performed while sitting or lying on your back:

1. Extend the knees and legs. In this exercise, you will need a roll of toilet paper to be put under your heel. Once the roll of toilet paper is in place, push your knee down and lock it in place. Lift your leg up slowly and then lower it down again. You can repeat this exercise 10 times for maximum results.

2. In this next exercise, extend your legs once more and make sure that the top of your thigh muscles are tightened. Hold for 3 seconds. While still tightening your muscles, raise your leg to about 3 inches from the floor. Hold the position for about 3 counts. Without releasing the tightening, lower your leg to the floor again. Hold the position for two more counts. Then, release the tension and rest your leg for about five seconds. Repeat 10 more times for 2 sets.

3. For this next exercise, you will need to lift your entire leg higher than the previous exercise. Start by tightening the muscles on your thigh and hold. Then, raise your leg to form a 60 degree angle with the floor and hold the position for about five counts. Lower your leg and rest for two counts. Repeat for about 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

4. For the next knee exercise, you will need to be lying on your back with your legs stretched out straight. Slowly slide one of your heels back and bring your knee closer to your chest. Hold for five counts, and slowly slide the heel back to original position. Repeat for about 5 times.

5. In this next exercise, sit on a chair that is high enough that your feet are kept off the floor. Bend your knees as far back as you can. Then straighten your knee forward and hold the position for about 5 counts. Lower your leg again and rest for 5 counts. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

6. For this final exercise, you need to be lying on your stomach. Slowly bend your knees up to make a 90 degree angle. Slowly bend your knee towards your body, using the other leg to help flex the active leg. Hold the position for about 10 counts. Repeat the exercise for 2 sets of 5 repetitions.

Some who suffer from arthritis are hesitant to engage in physical activity because they are afraid it may cause harm to their bodies. Ironically, some of the pain these people are experiencing is due to the complications of inactivity, rather than the arthritis itself. Research shows that many people with arthritis are quite capable of engaging in physical activity. It is important that these people maintain physical health and fitness, as it leads to greater flexibility, strength, and an overall sense of well-being.

However, if you have arthritis, certain exercises can be difficult and even harmful due to the stress they place on the joints throughout your body. These exercises are usually high-impact and should be avoided. Exercises such as jogging and weight-lifting tend to exert pressure, or impact, on the body in ways that could be harmful. Luckily, there are other "low-impact" exercises that provide excellent health benefits without inflicting any physical damage.

One option is aquatic therapy, which is gaining popularity amongst sufferers due to its ability to provide a great workout with less stress to fragile joints. The buoyancy effect of water drastically reduces the amount of body weight that is acting upon your joints. In fact, if you are standing in shoulder-high water, only 10% of your total body weight is acting upon your joints. You will also experience an enhanced range of motion, and in turn, you can strengthen a wider range of muscles due to the resistant nature of water. The pressure of the water helps to decrease swelling and increase circulation, not unlike wearing a support hose. Also, the soothing sensation of warm water helps to relieve stress, and may allow you to do things you could not normally do on land.

If you are one of the many sufferers of arthritis who is hesitant to engage in physical activity for fear of doing physical harm to your body, aquatic therapy may be the solution to your problem. Ask around, or visit your local community facilities and see if they have any classes, hydrotherapy pools, or swim spas designed to help people engage in low-impact aerobic exercise. Many facilities will offer a range of water-exercise programs. Be sure to look for a qualified instructor who is knowledge about arthritis. If you find a suitable location, you will find that aquatic therapy is a relaxing and enjoyable way to relieve the pain and stress associated with arthritis. Not to mention it is a great way to socialize and exercise at the same time!
